A water heater should be nearly silent. If yours is popping, rumbling, banging or hissing, it's telling you something — and in Florida's hard-water conditions, the message is usually about sediment. Here's how to decode the sounds and know when to act.
Popping and Rumbling: Sediment Buildup
The most common noise. Minerals in Florida's water settle at the bottom of the tank and harden into sediment. Water trapped beneath the sediment layer boils, and the steam bubbles burst through — that's the popping and rumbling you hear. Consequences of ignoring it: the heater works harder (higher energy bills), heats unevenly, and the tank bottom overheats, which can shorten the unit's life or crack the tank.
The fix: flushing the tank. If the unit is under 8–10 years old and the tank isn't damaged, a professional flush and water heater service often restores quiet, efficient operation.
Banging or Knocking: Water Hammer
Sharp bangs when water shuts off — at the heater or elsewhere — usually indicate water hammer: pressure spikes slamming through the pipes. It can loosen pipe straps and damage valves over time. A plumber can diagnose whether you need an expansion tank or pressure regulation.
Hissing or Sizzling: Possible Leak
A hissing water heater may have water dripping onto the hot burner or element — check for puddles around the base immediately. If you see water pooling, shut off the water supply to the heater and call us.

Electric heaters with scaled-over elements can whine or screech as water forces past the buildup. Descaling or element replacement solves it.
